Some of the members volunteer at Beckys Place assisting with miniture horses , being involved with grooming, feeding and walking the horses gives a great sensory experience with horse therapy.

Fryar Road Community Gardens & Horticulture

FIRST are closely linked to the Fryar Road Community Gardens.
Our members played a big role in the establishment of these gardens with the community group.
At Kelly St we have a nursery on site where we grow vegetables, herbs and fruit trees that is solely run by members with guidence from staff and mentors.
If you are interested in gardening and horticulture, please let us know if you would like to know more.

Cultural & Historical Awareness

The Member Consultative Committee nominate different sites they would like to visit during the year. Some examples of venues attended include; GOMA, Taoist Temple, Naidoc Week celebrations, Beenleigh Historical Museum, Train Museum, Fleay's Wildlife Park & the Daisy Hill Sanctuary.

Independent living skills.

FIRST has a strong emphasis on developing life and social skills. Much of our training and programs are designed to develop these skills. Another approach is to support people to access various venues in the community, whether in a group or individual setting. You can be supported to go to museums, libraries, pools, shopping centres, sports venues and more.

Hospitality - The Rock Cafe

FIRST run a weekly cooking and hospitality program. Members have voted to call it the Rock Cafe. Members are supported in a purpose built kitchen to learn basic food preparation for independent living from menu palnning through to food service.

Candles & Soap Making

At Cairns St the members make unique candle and soap products from Australian made natural materials that are earth and human friendly. Other products our members make in this relaxing enviroment are decided by the members and are made in small batches to increase skill development and encourage continued interest. These products include liquid soap, body washes, loofah soaps, bath salts and various items. The aromatherapy range includes floral, citus and wood based scents.

Fruit & Veg

The fruit & veg program has been going for several years and is very popular with many existing members. We buy the fruit & veg in bulk and then on-sell $20 boxes to the local community. You can learn all about fruit & vegetables, leadership, work health & safety, packing, money handling, weighing, counting, team work and more.

MakeDo

Members work at a range of activities chosen by them. This includes the restoration of furniture which we then donate to local nursing homes to encourage the understanding of giving back to the community and supporting the older generations. This program teaches work health & safety and includes using power and hand tools.
